With many individuals having long commutes to and from their job, it might not be that uncommon for a person to experience fatigue on the road. However, should authorities encounter a driver who is asleep at the wheel, they may be more inclined to suspect the presence of unlawful behavior. A West Virginia man is reportedly facing drunk driving charges after police found him asleep in his vehicle along an interstate.
According to reports, authorities received a tip from another driver about a vehicle that was parked alongside the interstate. Upon arriving at the scene, police claim they found the driver asleep behind the wheel, and assert they also noticed two needles inside the vehicle in the process. They assert that the driver initially refused to open the door and allegedly attempted to hide the needles.
After eventually opening the car door, law enforcement agents removed the man from within and placed him under arrest. They claim he exhibited signs of impairment during this period, and he has since been charged with DUI and obstructing an officer. It is unclear if field sobriety or breath tests were initiated and authorities have stated that they are awaiting the results of a blood draw.
Being accused of drunk driving can be a daunting experience, and those who face such allegations may be uncertain how best to approach the situation. Since the criminal justice system can be complex, a person who stands accused of similar charges could find it beneficial to consult with a defense attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can evaluate the charges and evidence against a client in West Virginia and provide guidance on the best course of action to take during subsequent court proceedings.
