West Virginia roads and highways are traveled frequently, both by residents commuting to their daily activities as well as visitors who enjoy the miles and miles of scenic byways. However, with thousands of travelers on the roads each day, it is inevitable that motor vehicle accidents regularly occur. Unfortunately, some of these accidents result in serious injuries to those involved. A recent crash of two cars near Lashmeet caused injuries to seven people.

According to the West Virginia State Police, a 34-year-old man was driving south on a state route in his car. Instead of turning left into a driveway, he apparently drove into the path of a northbound traveler. The collision, which occurred in the early evening of Sept. 18, resulted in injuries to occupants of both vehicles.

Police reports show that a young passenger in the northbound car suffered serious injuries. The juvenile had to be airlifted by helicopter to a medical center for treatment. Six other passengers were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Some of the injuries were reported to be serious in nature.

Whether seat belts were used by the drivers and passengers of the vehicles has not been determined. Rescue squads from Bluefield and Princeton, in addition to the Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department, were among the first responders to the scene. The investigation of the crash remains ongoing, and charges are pending.

While it may not be apparent in initial reports who may be at fault for this crash or other motor vehicle accidents, evidence can eventually show that one of the drivers acted in a negligent or harmful manner. Should this be the case, it would be wise to contact a West Virginia attorney for assistance in filing a personal injury lawsuit against the driver. A successful outcome in a lawsuit could provide families with an award to compensate for medical bills, therapy costs or loss of income, depending on the severity of the injuries.
