Two vehicles collided in Jefferson County in the early morning of Aug. 18, resulting in one fatality. West Virginia authorities in the area responded to the crash that killed a 25-year-old woman and sent two other people to a local hospital. Police say they have yet to determine the cause, but as with all fatal motor vehicle accidents, this is being carefully investigated.

Very little information was available in the report, but it has been confirmed that the crash occurred on Old Leetown Pike around 2:30 a.m. and involved two vehicles. A passenger in one of the vehicles, a 25-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The 22-year-old male driver of that vehicle was airlifted by helicopter to a local hospital, suffering from injuries described as serious.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 41-year-old man, was taken to a separate medical center by ambulance. The extent of his injuries is not known at this time. Police are unsure which driver was responsible for the accident, and they have not ruled out any potential contributing factors, including recklessness, negligence or intoxication. Their investigation is ongoing.

Once West Virginia police determine what caused the crash, they may decide to file criminal charges against the surviving driver. If the deceased driver is deemed responsible, no charges will be filed. However, in any cases of motor vehicle accidents causing injury or death, state law allows the potential for civil lawsuits to be filed for personal injury and/or wrongful death. Evidence gathered in a police investigation can be offered to support such claims.
